Sustainable development

We take this very seriously. That's why we place great emphasis on responsible financial services and socially responsible investing. We have developed risk management policies and tools that inform our decision making in environmentally and socially "sensitive" industries and along with products and expertise that enable us to apply sustainable investment in areas such as emerging markets. It's an approach that earned us the 2006 Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development from the World Environment Center and most recently the Financial Times Sustainable Bank of the Year for 2007.

We run our business responsibly, always taking environmental, social and ethical issues and the effect on future generations into account. This commitment can sometimes raise difficult dilemmas - dilemmas we are always prepared to address.

Beyond our products and services, we set targets to minimise the environmental impact of our offices around the world and we'll be carbon neutral by 2008. And we aim to be a good corporate citizen in all the communities we serve, providing financial donations and in-kind contributions, as well as encouraging our people to contribute to local social and charitable activities. We also provide an annual grant of £5 million to the ABN AMRO Foundation, which supports and stimulates entrepreneurship in poorer parts of the world to help foster sustainable livelihoods.
