ABN AMRO is different from other banks as the IT has been outsourced to a number of vendors. This means that working for ABN AMRO IT is far more about managing the delivery of a high quality IT service to our business than coding, programming or plugging in network cables. This fitted with the areas where I wanted to develop my career, using my skills from University but applying it to a more business focused role.

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme is the rotations, which give you a year to explore different parts of the business before committing to a long term role. For example, in my first year I managed the implementation of a new system to track and process IT expenditure in the bank. On another rotation I joined the Corporate Information Security Office, ensuring that vendors implemented IT systems securely, and making staff more aware of security. I also spent time in the New York office and as a Fixed Income Business Analyst. I now work in the Corporate Information Security Office as a Business Information Security Officer.

When I joined, I was assigned a "buddy" and a "mentor". This gives you the opportunity to regularly meet with a former graduate and an experienced member of the business. I used this network to learn about the different parts of the IT organisation and the business as a whole, to ensure I made the right choice on which team to join at the end of the rotation.

The bank's Graduate Development Programme is one of the best in the industry and provides the skills and time needed to ensure that you are able to work in the best area for your career. You’re given responsibility from day one and work in many interesting areas, so it’s the ideal start to a career.
