It was very early in my internship when I realised the that this was an excellent working environment where I could learn fast and, thanks to the culture of meritocracy, advance my career. I wasn't only attracted by the type of work, but also the modern European attitude.
I've worked in many different areas, including equities, derivatives, credit derivatives and local market sales, gaining a broad knowledge of the huge product offering of the bank. Right now I'm working in commodity derivatives, trading and marketing. This involves a certain element of risk, in order to maximise returns for the client. I have to say, at first it can appear to be quite difficult to add real value as a graduate, mostly because you need to assert yourself to gain the respect of your peers. But the mentor programme's really helped me in my transition to a situation where I can now get on with things, and show what I can do.
This is a tremendously exciting place to work. As a graduate you thrive on opportunities to succeed, and here you have the platform to build a broad understanding of the way the industry works, and to cultivate a sense of confidence in your financial judgement. The great thing is you get to work with people who set a good example – they achieve exceptional results, while maintaining the right work/life balance. My aim is to be a director of marketing or trading, and I’m confident that the opportunities are there for me to achieve that.
