From the first week's introductory programme, I've been given extensive opportunities to develop my skills, especially through my experiences of being part of a close-knit team. I'd say the culture at ABN AMRO is enviable compared to other places I've seen, in that it's hard work, exciting and incredibly varied. But most importantly for me, the people here are genuine and very focused on doing their job.
As part of the rotation programme, I'm now working with the Global Growth Equity team in London. There are eight of us in the team, and I’m learning quickly how the investment process works, and how different teams tackle things in different ways. I’ve also learnt some essential investment procedures, such as DCF/Non DCF valuation techniques, and key differentiating factors that help you to evaluate companies. I look after healthcare stocks, which means I constantly evaluate and revaluate our positions in healthcare companies, based on news and other sources of information. I'm also looking for leads on what to buy through sales brokers who offer me research and are looking to earn commission. My Asset Management rotations have been very helpful. I've had a month long shadowing placement where I rotated around back offices for a few days at a time, so I could learn how the company's internal mechanisms worked.
I knew very little of how to do the job before I started, and it was certainly a big challenge converting from a chemical engineer working at a nuclear reprocessing facility, to becoming a financial analyst. Fortunately, I was equipped with the right mathematical skills to help me learn the financial essentials. Having said that, the bank's been extremely proficient in providing us all with the training that ensures that, regardless of our backgrounds, we all know what we're doing. I've really enjoyed working with the team I'm now in, and I would gladly return to do the same or a similar role in the future. But I'd like to experience the rest of the opportunities available before making a decision.
