Living and working in London

London is one of the world's leading financial centres, as well as being one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the planet, with communities from a host of different countries.

From history, diverse cultures, every kind of sport, world famous West End theatres, and various other arts and entertainments, to a thriving nightlife and social scene, and restaurants serving food from every corner of the globe, it's a city that really does offer something for everyone. And, although London can be an expensive place to live, it doesn't have to be - all of the national museums and art galleries offer free entry, and there are various free lunchtime concerts around the City. London's also surprisingly green - every part of the city is full of parks and open spaces where you can relax and watch the world go by.

Getting around the city is relatively easy, with a good public transport system linking central London with all the suburbs - although, like any major city, traffic can sometimes be a problem. If you're coming to London for the first time, it's a good idea to get hold of an A-Z map, which will also give you a map of the underground railway system (or 'the tube' as Londoners call it).

As you'd expect, London's a great place for shopping - even if you're on a budget. Central London offers a full range of shops, from major chain stores to exclusive designer outlets. But there are also plenty of smaller food shops and a host of markets where you can find good quality, fresh food and household products at reasonable prices. And, because of London's cultural diversity, you'll find local stores offering products from every part of the world.

Because London's one of the world's major cities, accommodation can be very expensive, although this varies depending on where you want to live. Generally, the nearer you are to central London, the more expensive it is. Many people share accommodation to save money, and this can be a good way of meeting people.
