Living and working in Sydney
Sydney is Australia's largest city and the state capital of New South Wales, on the south-east coast of Australia. A vibrant city, with a population of over four million people, originating from over 180 countries and speaking over 140 languages it's an incredibly multicultural city.
Sydney is the largest corporate and financial centre in Australia and an important financial centre in the Asia-Pacific region. With one of the worlds' most beautiful natural harbours as its backdrop, it enjoys a unique outdoor lifestyle. As well as many parks and open spaces, there are plenty of opportunities to eat al fresco and an extensive choice of outdoor leisure activities. And the city also boasts more than 70 beaches, including Bondi, Manly and Cronulla.
The city's cultural life is also extensive, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Theatre Company and Sydney Dance Company. And the world-famous Sydney Opera House boasts five theatres. As well as being the home to Opera Australia, the world's third busiest opera company, it also hosts a huge variety of concerts and performances. The city also has strong links to the global movie industry, through Fox Studios Australia. Major films such as Moulin Rouge, Mission Impossible II, Star Wars episodes II and III, and The Matrix were all filmed in the city.
With such an outdoor lifestyle, the city has many parks and open spaces - even at its heart - such as the Royal Botanical Gardens. And the metropolitan area also includes a number of national parks, including the Royal National Park. Sydney also boasts a number of museums, including the Australian Museum, the Powerhouse Museum and the Australian National Maritime Museum.
Australia's one of the most competitive nations on the planet when it comes to sports. And, as you'd expect from the venue of the 2000 summer Olympic games, Sydney offers plenty of opportunities for watching and playing sport. As well as 15 national rugby league teams, the city is home to teams competing in national leagues for Australian Rules Football, soccer, basketball, baseball, netball, cricket and rugby union. Of course, Sydney Harbour's also famous for yacht racing, as well as dragon boat racing and fishing.
Sydney has a good public transport system, with regular services operating within the city's underground rail network and throughout the suburbs. As well as buses, light rail, monorail and train services, there are numerous ferries that run on the harbour and the Parramatta River.
